It’s not for you, heel edition, oil paint, 24”x 36”
A stiletto heel... typically worn for its fashion or confidence-boosting qualities. The accessory that gives physical and mental height, a powerful walk, and a more commanding presence. Designed by two men, it offers confidence but can also cause pain, keeping its wearer in a temporary state of false power
This oil paint-focused mixed-media artwork is part of the series It's Not For You. My work explores themes of the female form and the "expectations and power" that come with it. Specifically, accessories, actions, and stylistic choices that make women feel confident and beautiful, which initiate a sense of power and command, while from the viewpoint of the gaze, these accessories are worn purely to attract rather than for oneself.
My first step was to sketch out the composition for this artwork, which is from my photography. I then left room for a border, which at the final step will be wrapped in a glossy black fabric to mimic the heels' shiny effect.

In my first update, the model is wearing black stockings. After I add more detail to the skin, I will create the texture of the tights.

My next step is to continue adding detail to the skin, then I will begin working on the fabric. Since the oil is still wet, the shadow under the calf is catching a spotted glare.

I am beginning to paint the background a solid light powder pink, which is more noticeable in person. The purpose behind this design choice is to bring out cool toned highlights and allow the later-added glossy fabric to act as the background's main event.

To enhance visual interest, I used lace stockings to create a pattern on the model's legs, using them purely as a texture element. The goal here is aesthetic interest, not realism.

This is the initial layer of the heel. The paint needs time to dry before I can add fabric texture and detail to make it stand out. Then, the final step is sewing the glossy fabric around the frame and painting the final highlight and shadow touch-ups.

After a lot of trial and error with applying the latex fabric, I have decided to create the dark border with paint. Once the oil has had time to dry, to create extreme shine, I will be applying Heavy Damar Medium to the heel and border.
